In general, real world knowledge base systems require the constant addition and subtraction of knowledge. The process for making these changes can be designed to be performed by programmers and/or by end users. Each option has advantages and disadvantages. Some important issues to consider are:
- Personnel Availability and Cost
- Mission Criticality of the System
- Required Knowledge Quality and Data Accuracy
These issues must be addressed early in the design process. Also, if knowledge is to be maintained by the users, a custom user interface will typically be required.
